Tine
- Tine is 26 years old and comes from a mountain village in Karangasem and worked
before in Kuta.
- She couldn’t go to school because her mother needed her help at home.
- When she became 12, she found a job and handed her salary to her mother so her
sisters and brothers could go to school.
- She never thought about it, for her this was very normal.
- She couldn’t write or read and she was only interested in learning English.
- Last year she became very sick and couldn’t work for a long time.
- She realised that she was 26 and that she had no future.
- But she was also lucky; she met with her Australian boyfriend, in the mean time they
married and expecting their first child.
Komang
- Komang is 18 years old and works in Kuta in a beauty salon together with her
step sister Santi.
- She comes from a mountain villages in Karangasem and never went to school.
- She couldn’t write or read and hardly spoke the Indonesian language.
- Now, she even has a basic knowledge of English.
- Her step sister Santi could go to elementary school until the third class.
- Together they where following the program from the Yayasan.
- But it is not a success story every time; they stopped with the lessons because their
“friends” told them that education is not important for a woman.
